Religious Freedom: the right to Define Marriage
Passage of proposition 8 via the support of various religious organizations made something very clear to me. Marriage is a religious institution. And as a believer in religious freedom I support their right to fight to define it as their conscious dictates (keeping in mind that there are religions that believe in an inclusive loving God that blesses same sex unions).
Let us remember that our country has two fundamental tenants. 1. The separation of church and state. And 2. That under the eye of the law all are created equal and that laws should not discriminate.
Consequently, all should be afforded equal treatment, and any law which seeks to make a distinction should do so for a greater reason than to further a particular religious view.
Any government institution which grants thousand of legal rights should be afforded equally to all of its citizens. I support civil unions for all. Both, same-sex and opposite-sex, legally recognized unions should be called civil unions.
Government, get out of Marriage!! Religion, stop legislating your religious views!!
If you agree I invite you to join this group. I also invite you to pass this information along. Inform anyone who will listen. It is time for government to get out of a religious institution.
I think it's a good idea. Getting it enacted might take a while...
ReplyDeleteIf we can only convince a political party to stand up for smaller government that does not intrude in peoples personal life. Oh wait there is such a party but I guess small government only applies to regulating banks and business but bedrooms need to be highly regulated.
